Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 Meets Jupiter

This 407 x 480 pixel image shows that Shoemaker-Levy 9 first appeared in the form of a flattened comet with wings extending from either side. More detailed images revealed that the comet was composed of a train of distinct nuclei.
